The law office of attorney Dr. Attila Tolnai, based in Miskolc and with international experience, is located in the provincial capital of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, in the northeast of Hungary. The firm actively participates in both domestic and Low Countries (Dutch and Belgian) legal transactions.
The main focus areas of our office are real estate law, corporate law, criminal law, social law, immigration matters, and family and inheritance law involving elements of private international law. We oversee the legal compliance of trade and investment projects related to Hungary in the Low Countries (Belgium and the Netherlands), and vice versa in Belgium and the Netherlands.
My colleague, Dr. Mónika Marietta Vékony, serves as a legal advisor and is also the Hungarian member of an international law firm based in Antwerp. The languages spoken by our colleagues include Dutch and, of course, Hungarian.
Our clients' experiences
- We all know the horror stories about legal problems abroad. I thought: "That won't happen to me." Until I suddenly received a registered letter that our house would be auctioned... What turned out? Three years earlier, I had accidentally entered the wrong tax number when making a payment to the Hungarian tax authorities. As a result, the payment could not be assigned - and the tax authorities therefore did not know that we had already paid. Years later, without any other contact, we were suddenly up to our necks in water. Fortunately, I found someone via Facebook who really saved us.
- She speaks excellent Dutch, knows the Hungarian system inside and out, and guided us from start to finish. Thanks to her dedication, knowledge and perseverance, the house was not auctioned and everything was resolved with the tax authorities. I am sharing this because I know that many Dutch people in Hungary are struggling with similar situations. Whether it concerns taxes, property, permits or other legal matters: Mónika tackles it professionally, honestly and humanly. Are you looking for legal assistance in Hungary and do you want someone who really understands you? Then I highly recommend her.
- She knows her job well, I also regularly call on her, always well arranged MariettaVékony Monika Marietta is a great professional.
- Hello Everyone,
I live in Spain. Vékony Monika Marietta was also able to solve my official case with Spanish and Catalan administration here. And among other things, she not only helped, but followed the entire process and also provided the spiritual support to achieve my goal. So I am very grateful to her and I recommend her high EU level work to everyone.
- I'd like to recommend Dr. Vekony Monika and thank her very much for her services. I just received my tax card and the rest is on its way. It was inexpensive and the service was fantastic.
- We'd like to give Dr. Monika a special shout-out. She arranged everything perfectly for us, from start to finish! If anyone needs help with, for example: - Residence permit - Lacksime card - Tax card I highly recommend Dr. Monika. She does everything in Dutch. See her Facebook page for contact information. What we do
Emigrating to Hungary can be an attractive option due to the relatively low cost of living, beautiful nature, rich culture, and favorable real estate prices. Here are the main things to keep in mind:
Residence permit – As an EU citizen (such as Dutch or Belgian nationals), you do not need a visa to move to Hungary. However, you must:
Register your stay within 90 days at the Immigration Office (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság – OIF).
Apply for an address registration card and a residence card.
Registration and administration – You will need:
An address in Hungary (rental contract or proof of ownership).
Proof of sufficient income or savings.
Health insurance (you can choose between a Hungarian provider or your Dutch insurance with EU coverage).
Your EU ID card or passport.
Living and housing – Real estate is inexpensive compared to Western Europe.
Popular areas include: Budapest, Lake Balaton, or rural regions for peace and space.
When buying property, carefully check the legal status (e.g. proof of ownership, building permits).
Work and income – As an EU citizen, you are free to work, start a business, or receive a pension.
Hungarian wages are lower, but so are living costs.
Many expats work online or live off savings/pensions.
Hungarian language – It's difficult to learn but essential for integration.
In tourist areas and in Budapest, English or German is often spoken.
Tax and finances – Consult a tax advisor about double taxation.
Hungary has a flat income tax rate of 15%.
You may need to open a Hungarian bank account.
Healthcare and education – Hungarian healthcare is accessible but varies in quality.
International schools are available in larger cities.
